Our Impact

Each year board members present opportunities of giving to the group and each gift or sponsorship is carefully reviewed. Our mission is to support the programs that will drive success and create opportunities for the disenfranchised and vulnerable youth of our community. Our hope is that the funds and involvement provided will support direct services and impact programs and organizations with successful strategies already in place. Our areas of focus tend to be education based with elements of safety provisions woven in. Our list of beneficiaries include schools and fellow non-profit organizations working with youth on a daily basis.

Here are some of the folks we’ve helped along the way

UMASS Legacy Fund- We have fully funded a scholarship endowment that generates annual proceeds for scholarship opportunities to students at UMASS Dartouth

New Bedford High School Music & Drama: SCBA has been able to provide $1,000 each year to a student at New Bedford High School enrolled in the arts and music program(s) at NBHS.

Star Kids- We currently support one student’s tuition ($3,500/year) for enrollment in the Star Kids Scholarship Program. The board just voted to sponsor a second student at the additional $3,500/year level doubling our annual commitment. The Star Kids Scholarship provides support and education to children of parents who’ve been incarcerated or have a history of substance abuse.

Dennison Memorial: The after school programs and sports at Dennison are paramount to providing safety and alternate choices for children in one of the most challenged areas of the South End of New Bedford. The SCBA has provided funding for Basketball uniforms and has also earmarked $15,000 for the after-school mentoring and tutoring program for the next three years.

YMCA After School Program: SCBA has supported the after school program at the New Bedford YMCA which provides more than safe harbor and care for students after school. The YMCA’s care program has also taken on initiatives t ensure that their enrolled students who may face hunger challenges are also provided backpack lunches and snacks for the day. SCBA has donated $5,000 to this program.

Boys & Girls Club-Aside from monetary support for their programs annually, one of the very first hands on tasks the SCBA took on was to completely renovate the boxing gym at BGC of New Bedford. Our members purchased equipment and got to work, painting, cleaning and giving the gym a new look. ten years after the project was complete, SCBA replaced worn equipment.

Bristol County Children’s Advocacy Center- Providing services to children who have been sexually abused. We have partnered with CAC since the very beginning, sponsoring the annual Kentucky Derby and committing proceeds from events in previous years to help further the impact of their work.

Junior Achievement- This organization provides budding entrepreneurs with the opportunity to succeed and prepare for a global economy. The annual Titan Challenge is held in March at UMASS Dartmouth. SCBA has sponsored the Silver Scholarship amount of $2,250 each year.
